Information Privilege and Representation
This lesson uses disability studies to look at the effect of representation (or lack of representation) in the news. In this lesson, students discuss the importance of marginalized communities representing their perspectives on important issues, especially when those issues directly affect them.
Topics Covered
Learning Outcomes
Students will:
1) explain why representation matters in news stories;
2) identify problems that could arise when disabled people’s perspectives are left out of the narrative on disability issues;
3) describe why it is important to seek out perspectives of those who are most affected by events shared in the news and demonstrate how they will search for those perspectives in the future.
